The Pros and Cons of the Industrial Internet of Things

As a part of the greater Internet of Things, the industrial version allows for significant strides in operational efficiencies. While IIoT may present great opportunities in scalability, safety, and preventative maintenance, it also comes with some potential issues in interoperability and security.

Interoperability between equipment protocols makes adoption of Industrial IoT a hurdle for many companies. Converting legacy devices with standardized, open-source technology can bridge different platforms until a widely-accepted standard emerges.

As the popularity of IIoT systems rise, so will their vulnerability. Hackers are drawn to the most popular platforms because of the wider base for potential exposures. Consistent firmware updates and developers who are on the ball about fixing security issues are the most influential in making systems more secure. Since most IoT devices work over wireless networks, companies must take care to protect their passwords and network configurations.

While major companies are making security in IoT a higher priority for the protection of their customers, every business installing an IoT system should still certify the security and involve IT professionals for monitoring and connectivity support.
