Size Matters: What Small Business Owners Should Know About Automation

Robotics and automation are no longer reserved for huge, multi-national corporations. The introduction of affordable automation technology like collaborative robots changes the game for everyone. While most of the hype around robotics focuses on increased productivity, reduced labor costs and operational efficiency, it is imperative that small business owners become familiar with these new technologies.

Robots will not take over everything. A recent study released by PwC predicts that 38% of US jobs will be replaced by robots in less than 15 years. Jobs that require creativity are far less likely to be automated than repetitive activities. While robotics in a warehouse to pick items off shelves may make sense, replacing creative roles with Artificial Intelligence is less likely to yield a similar payoff. Businesses that rely on long-term customer relationships will still require a human touchpoint.

Automation is affordable for small business. While many may not realize it, the cost of automation is within the reach of many small businesses. For example, collaborative robots are vastly cheaper than traditional robotic equipment and can be easily set up, programmed and re-deployed for a variety of tasks within a matter of minutes. As is the case with all technology, the longer it is around, the cheaper it becomes as the tech increases and more players enter the market.

Stay aware of regulatory changes in your industry. Some industries are still grappling with the rise of wider-spread automation. Small business owners should understand any regulations or legal concerns prior to implementation. Some industries, such as healthcare, are more prone to these regulations than others.

Small businesses should plan to incorporate some level of automation within the next few years. Develop a budget, choose what tasks are best served by automation, and learn about what technology is available and how it is already being used in your industry.  Speak to one of our engineers about what automation options might be right for you – it’s personalized, and it’s free.
