The Sprecher + Schuh CX7-9-10-120-AS4A-A10-WSSG-S10 is a factory-assembled, non-reversing enclosed combination motor controller that integrates all the elements of a fully compliant motor branch circuit into a single, ready-to-install painted steel enclosure. It combines a CA7-9 IEC contactor with a KTA9-32S Series Motor Protection Circuit Breaker (MPCB), delivering Construction Type E and Type F combination starter capability per UL 508, CSA C22.2 No. 60947-4-1, and IEC/EN 60947-4-1 — without requiring any additional upstream branch circuit protection device.
What's Inside the Box
The heart of the assembly is the KTA9-32S-4.0A Motor Protection Circuit Breaker — a Frame C, Standard Interrupting Capacity device with an adjustable thermal overload range of 2.5 to 4.0 amperes and a fixed magnetic instantaneous trip set at approximately 14 times the maximum current adjustment value (52A). The KTA9-32S provides Class 10 overload protection, phase loss sensitivity, and manual ON/OFF switching — covering disconnect, short-circuit protection, overload protection, and manual control in a single 45mm-wide device. The terminal adaptor for Type E applications (Cat. No. KT9-40-TE) is factory-installed, ensuring compliance with UL 508 Part IV spacing requirements for Type E self-protected combination starters.
Paired to the MPCB is a CA7-9 IEC contactor, rated 9A at AC-3, with a 110V/50Hz — 120V/60Hz AC coil. The contactor provides the remote switching and automatic control function for the motor branch circuit, and is factory-wired with the MPCB so the assembly ships as a complete, power-ready unit. An included front-mounted 1 NO auxiliary contact (A10 modification, Cat. No. KT9-PE1-10, 250V max) is pre-wired to de-energize the contactor coil upon KTA9 overload or short-circuit trip, ensuring that a fault condition immediately drops out the contactor — a critical protective interlock function.
The Enclosure
The assembly is housed in a painted steel Type 4/12 enclosure (enclosure code WG), which is rated watertight and dusttight — suitable for indoor and outdoor industrial environments where incidental water contact and airborne dust are concerns. The enclosure features a through-the-door handle disconnect mechanism with a gray/black operator. This lockable, defeatable handle allows the motor branch circuit to be de-energized with the enclosure door closed, satisfying NEC requirements for a motor disconnect means. The selector switch pilot device (S10 option, Off-On configuration) is factory-mounted on the enclosure door and provides local manual ON/OFF control of the contactor coil.
Type E/F Construction Explained
When applied as a self-protected (Type E) combination motor controller, the KTA9-32S provides all NEC/CEC-required functions for a single motor branch circuit — disconnect, short-circuit protection, overload protection, and manual switching — without requiring a separate upstream fuse or circuit breaker. The addition of the CA7 contactor with coil makes this a Construction Type E (manual combination) or Type F (magnetically controlled combination) starter, depending on the control circuit application. This results in a substantially more compact and cost-effective panel solution compared to traditional Construction Type A (fusible) or Type C (thermal-magnetic MCCB) starters.
Horsepower Ratings and Typical Applications
At the 2.5–4.0A overload range, the KTA9-32S-4.0A is rated for motors up to 3/4 HP at 200V, 3/4 HP at 230V, 2 HP at 460V, and 3 HP at 575V (three-phase, service factor ≥ 1.15). Typical applications include conveyor motors, pump motors, fan motors, and HVAC equipment in commercial and light industrial settings — anywhere a compact, fully compliant combination motor starter is needed in a painted steel weatherproof enclosure with local selector switch control.
