The ABB AB-ETHERNET-IP-2 is a 2-port Anybus communication adapter that adds EtherNet/IP fieldbus connectivity to ABB PSTX softstarters. It lets a PLC start, stop, reset, and monitor the softstarter over a standard EtherNet/IP network, replacing hardwired control with deterministic digital communication. The two RJ45 ports support daisy-chain (line) topology, so multiple softstarters and devices share a single network run without an external switch.

What it does

  • PLC control of the softstarter: start, stop, reset, slow-speed, and sequence start commands sent as digital telegrams.
  • Real-time monitoring back to the PLC: motor current (percent of Ie), phase currents, status, and event/fault data.
  • Parameter read/write over the bus using Anybus Fieldbus Tasks, including setting the real-time clock.
  • Module Status and Network Status indication for fast commissioning and diagnostics.

Who it is for

Panel builders, integrators, and maintenance teams who need to put an ABB PSTX softstarter on an EtherNet/IP network, typically under a Rockwell/Allen-Bradley ControlLogix or CompactLogix PLC, or any controller that speaks EtherNet/IP. ABB publishes an EDS file (AB_EIPT_2_PSTX) so the adapter drops into the PLC's I/O tree for fast configuration.

1-port vs 2-port

Choose the 2-port AB-ETHERNET-IP-2 when you want to daisy-chain the softstarter into a line network alongside other devices without a dedicated switch. If the softstarter is the only node on a drop or wired in a star topology to a switch, the 1-port AB-ETHERNET-IP-1 is sufficient. Both run the same EtherNet/IP protocol on the PSTX platform.

Frequently asked questions

Which softstarters does the AB-ETHERNET-IP-2 work with?

It is the Anybus EtherNet/IP adapter for the ABB PSTX softstarter range. It is not a drive or PLC module - it installs on a PSTX softstarter to give it EtherNet/IP communication.

Does it work with a Rockwell / Allen-Bradley PLC?

Yes. EtherNet/IP is the native protocol for ControlLogix and CompactLogix controllers. Add the softstarter to the PLC using ABB's EDS file (AB_EIPT_2_PSTX).

What can the PLC control over the bus?

Start, stop, reset, slow-speed and sequence-start commands, plus full monitoring of motor current, phase currents, status and events. Parameters can be read and written over the bus using Anybus Fieldbus Tasks.

Do I need the 1-port or 2-port version?

Use the 2-port AB-ETHERNET-IP-2 for daisy-chain (line) networks without an extra switch. Use the 1-port AB-ETHERNET-IP-1 for a single drop or star topology.
