ABB Customer World: Next Level Automation Excellence
In case you are not attending the ABB show in Houston this week, here is a synopsis of the keynote panel discussion addressing improving project costs, uptime, productivity and efficiency.
Panelists encouraged companies to take a completely new approach and consider rebuilding their systems from the ground floor that can double to triple savings. “We have to change the way we are looking at and executing projects—not just squeezing prices, but new ways of looking at things,” said Jose Bustamante of Flour Corporation.
According to the President of ABB’s Industrial Automation division, “Project cost reductions are putting pressure on automation costs, so we are seeing more cloud engineering, digital marshalling, and automated data management….”
The panel discussion also revealed that plants and engineers are pursuing IoT and greater connectivity. One Peru-based concrete supplier noted that his company is currently testing robots for packaging as well as drones and self-driving vehicles in quarries to prevent accidents.
Reducing downtime is another potential area for great savings. According to Control Global, 80% of unplanned downtime may be avoidable, which can save industries like oil and gas up to $20 billion annually by circumventing power interruptions with extended service intervals provided by widespread digitization.
