What Is an Energetic Diffuse Sensor?
An energetic diffuse sensor emits a light beam and switches its output based on the intensity of light scattered back from the target. Because it reacts to returned light energy, sensing distance depends on how reflective the target is: the ET328.3/4P-M12 reaches 0.7 m on 90% white but proportionally less on darker or matte surfaces (roughly 0.28 m guaranteed on 6% black). This makes it an efficient, low-cost choice for reliable presence detection at close-to-mid range where target reflectivity is consistent.
Specifying in a new design: an energetic diffuse sensor has no background suppression, so a highly reflective background behind the target, or a target much darker than its surroundings, can affect switching. If you need to detect objects against a close or shiny background, or need a fixed cutoff distance regardless of color, choose a background-suppression (BGS) diffuse sensor instead. For straightforward presence and gap detection on consistent targets, the ET328.3/4P-M12 is the right, economical tool.
