M12 Adapters & Accessories

M12 Caps, Terminators, Adapters and Installation Tools

This category holds the parts that finish an M12 installation: protective caps for open ports, bus terminators, M12 to RJ45 and pin-count adapters, torque sleeves and torque wrench sets, receptacle gaskets and O-rings, and tamper-evident seals. Automation Distribution carries these from Turck, WAGO, Leuze, Pizzato, B&R, SensoPart, Schneider Electric, SMC, and other authorized brands.

Most accessories are brand specific, so start with the brand of the cordset, receptacle, or I/O block you are working with, then match the coding, thread size, or pin count. For the cordsets and receptacles themselves, go back to M12 Connectors & Cordsets.

Matching Tips

  • Caps come in socket and plug versions. A cap for an unused female port will not fit a male port. WAGO, for example, lists separate caps for unused sockets (756-8102) and unused plugs (756-8103).
  • Terminators follow the bus coding. PROFIBUS terminators are B-coded and CAN bus terminators are A-coded, so a terminator for one network will not seat on the other.
  • Turck torque sleeves fit Turck's redesigned M12 cordsets. Turck makes the sleeve from PA and states it works with all metal coupling nuts. It speeds installation and helps keep contaminants out, and cordsets can still be installed without it where space is tight.
  • Tighten to the datasheet value. Torque specifications are set by each manufacturer. Baumer, for example, specifies 0.6 Nm for its M12 coupling nuts. A torque wrench set takes the guesswork out on the line.
  • Gaskets are sized by mounting thread, not by M12. Check the receptacle's mounting thread before ordering. Turck offers one gasket for PG9, M16, and 1/4" NPT receptacles and a separate one for M20 and 1/2" NPT.
  • Check pack quantities. Many caps, sleeves, gaskets, and seals are sold in packs of 10, 50, 100, or more. Confirm the quantity in the product name before ordering.

M12 Accessory FAQ

Do I need to cap unused M12 ports?

Yes, on any port that is exposed to dust, liquids, or washdown. An open M12 port does not carry the protection rating of a mated connection, so the manufacturer's sealing cap is what keeps the I/O block or junction box sealed. Use a socket cap for female ports and a plug cap for male ports.

What does an M12 bus terminator do?

An M12 bus terminator closes the end of a fieldbus segment so the signal does not reflect back down the line. It plugs into the open M12 port on the last device. Match the terminator to the network: B-coded for PROFIBUS and A-coded for CAN bus systems such as CANopen.

How do I connect an M12 Ethernet device to an RJ45 port?

Use an M12 to RJ45 adapter or an M12 to RJ45 cordset. Choose D-coded 4-pin for 100 Mbit/s networks such as most PROFINET and EtherNet/IP devices, and X-coded 8-pin for Gigabit devices such as vision cameras. Inline adapters suit short service connections, while cordsets suit permanent runs.

What is a Turck M12 torque sleeve?

A Turck M12 torque sleeve is a PA sleeve that fits over the coupling nut of Turck's redesigned M12 cordsets. Turck states it is compatible with all metal coupling nuts and that it makes installation faster while helping keep contaminants out. Sleeves are sold in 10-packs in nine colors, plus an all-color pack, and a removal tool is available.

How tight should an M12 connector be?

Tighten to the value on the cordset or receptacle datasheet, because torque specifications differ by manufacturer. Baumer, for example, specifies 0.6 Nm for its M12 coupling nuts. Under-tightened connectors can loosen under vibration and lose their seal, and over-tightening can damage the coupling nut or the port.
