VS40 Machine Vision Smart Cameras
Zebra VS40 Machine Vision Smart Cameras
The Zebra VS40 is the versatile all-in-one of Zebra's smart camera line. Integrated auto-focus optics and built-in, field-replaceable illumination mean it handles most inspection applications without an external lens or light, in 2.3 or 5.1 MP color or monochrome. It runs on the Zebra Aurora software platform, with toolsets you upgrade by license as the application grows. Automation Distribution is an authorized Zebra Technologies distributor supplying the full VS40 range and the software and accessories that support it.
Where the C-mount VS70 hands you the optics to assemble, the VS40 arrives ready: auto-focus is built in, illumination is integrated and swappable, and I/O is extensive. You configure it by choosing the range, resolution, sensor, illumination, and filter that match the part. The sections below cover what makes the VS40 self-contained, how to choose a configuration, and where it fits against Zebra's other vision lines.
Optics and lighting, built in
| Integrated auto-focus Optics are built into the camera in wide-angle or standard-range versions, so there is no external lens to size or mount. Auto-focus adapts to the working distance. | Field-replaceable lighting Five integrated illumination options, including red, white, blue, and infrared, are swappable in the field, so one camera adapts to different surfaces without external lights. | Rich I/O and ImagePerfect+ Up to nine digital I/O ports plus a USB-C port, dual Ethernet, and PoE power. ImagePerfect+ captures multiple images per trigger, each with its own settings. |
Choosing a VS40 configuration
Every VS40 shares dual Ethernet with PoE, serial, USB, and industrial protocol connectivity. The configuration is where the VS40 is tailored to the part, the surface, and the lighting conditions.
| Choice | Options | How to decide |
|---|---|---|
| Optics | Wide angle or standard range | Wide angle covers larger parts or shorter working distances. Standard range suits typical distances and general inspection. |
| Resolution | 2.3 MP or 5.1 MP | 5.1 MP resolves finer detail or a wider field of view at the same detail. 2.3 MP suits faster cycles and general work. |
| Sensor type | Color or monochrome | Monochrome is more sensitive for measurement and defect work. Choose color when the inspection depends on distinguishing colors. |
| Toolset | Sensor or Standard MV | Match the toolset to the job, from focused sensor tasks up to broader machine vision. Capability can be upgraded later by license. |
| Illumination | Red, white, blue, and infrared combinations | Match the light to the surface and the feature. The integrated option is field-replaceable, so the choice is not permanent. |
| Optical filter | No filter, RGB, or red bandpass | A bandpass filter isolates a lighting wavelength for contrast and glare control. Choose no filter for general work. |

Software and setup
The VS40 is set up and operated through Zebra Aurora, the same platform that runs Zebra's fixed industrial scanners and machine vision smart cameras, so one interface manages the whole fleet. For the full Aurora software suite, including Design Assistant and the Imaging Library, see Zebra Aurora Software. Browse the complete lineup on the Zebra Machine Vision page.
Accessories
Because optics and lighting are integrated, a VS40 install is mostly cabling, mounting, and the occasional external light for wide or long-distance fields of view. Browse compatible parts and selection guidance on the Zebra Lensing, Lighting and Accessories page.
