How to Ensure a Leak-proof Push-fit Connection
After decades of successful performance, enhanced by ongoing innovation and improvement from our engineers, we’re confident that the JG Speedfit push-fit design is built to last and always creates a leak-proof push-fit connection when installed correctly.
We also know that plumbing environments can be challenging. Parts/fittings can get damaged on site, plumbers have to make blind connections and installers will occasionally make an educated guess. Each of these factors can adversely affect the installation.
Tips for Installing Push-fit Connections
Fortunately, these risks can all be avoided. By following a few simple rules for best practice, installers can create reliable and long-lasting, leak-proof plumbing connections, every time.
Keep Your Push-fit Connection Clean
One common cause of poor connections is that the fittings have become dirty or damaged. The best way to prevent this is to keep fittings in a bag until you need to use them, preventing them from getting scratched or dirty.
When ready to fit, you may need to cut the pipe to a certain length. Always use a specialist plastic cutter for this purpose.
Use Inserts Where Needed
When working with Speedfit pipes, you will have to use an insert. As well as making sure the pipe is cut square, it’s important to make sure the insert goes fully into the pipe.
Push-fit It All The Way
It is important to ensure the pipe is pushed fully into the fitting. There are insertion depth marks on the pipe – if you cut against the first mark, the next mark will demarcate that the pipe is fully inserted into the fitting.
Once the pipe is in all the way, make sure you twist and lock the pipe into the fitting to clamp everything down for a secure connection.
Know The Problem
When leaks do happen, it’s almost always because of one, or a combination of the following:
- The pipe isn’t cut properly
- The insert isn’t pushed all the way in
- The pipe isn’t fully connected to the fitting
The important thing is not to guess. Follow the instructions, keep everything clean and use the right tools, and you’ll have leak-proof plumbing connections every time.
