NS4 Series Machine Vision Sensors
Zebra NS4 Series Machine Vision Smart Sensors
The Zebra NS4 Series, led by the NS42, is an AI-first machine vision smart sensor. Deep-learning-based OCR and anomaly detection ship standard on every unit, so it solves challenging text-reading and defect-inspection jobs out of the box, alongside traditional machine vision and barcode reading. Processing runs onboard the sensor with 8 GB of memory, and the rugged IP67 housing holds up on the line. Automation Distribution is an authorized Zebra Technologies distributor supplying the NS4 Series and the software and accessories that complete it.
Where a general-purpose smart camera asks you to build the inspection first, the NS42 arrives with deep-learning tools already trained and ready: read distorted or low-contrast characters, and catch defects the sensor was never explicitly programmed to look for. The sections below cover what the deep-learning tools do, how to choose an NS42 configuration, and where the NS4 Series fits against Zebra's other vision lines.
AI inspection, out of the box
| Deep-learning OCR Reads challenging characters, including distorted, low-contrast, and dot-peen text, without building or training a custom model first. Standard on every NS42. | Anomaly detection Learns what a good part looks like and flags deviations through automated image comparison, catching defects that were never explicitly defined. Standard on every NS42. | ImagePerfect+ Captures up to 16 distinct images per trigger, each with its own focus, exposure, and illumination, so a single event covers conditions that used to need multiple sensors. |
Choosing an NS42 configuration
NS42 models share the same core: 2.0 MP standard-range sensor, the essential machine vision toolset with deep-learning OCR and anomaly detection, onboard processing, and connectivity over Ethernet with PoE, serial, USB, and industrial protocols. Configurations differ mainly by how the scene is lit and filtered.
| Choice | Options | How to decide |
|---|---|---|
| Illumination | Red, white, and other integrated options | Red boosts contrast on many monochrome reading tasks; white suits color or mixed-surface work. Match the light to the surface and the mark you are reading. |
| Optical filter | No filter, or polarizing | A polarizing filter cuts glare from reflective or shiny surfaces. Choose no filter for matte parts and general work. |
| Connectivity | Ethernet with PoE, serial, USB, industrial protocols | Standard across the range, so integration into a PLC or host network is consistent regardless of the model you pick. |

Software and setup
The NS4 Series is set up and operated through Zebra Aurora, the same platform that runs Zebra's fixed industrial scanners and machine vision smart cameras, so one interface manages your whole fleet. For the full Aurora software suite, including Design Assistant and the Imaging Library, see Zebra Aurora Software. Browse the complete lineup on the Zebra Machine Vision page.
Lenses, lighting, and accessories
Complete an NS42 installation with the cabling, mounts, external lighting, and protective covers it needs. Most installations use at least a power connection, host communication, and, where external lighting is added, a light control cable.
