SMC D-M9P Solid State Auto Switch, 3-wire PNP, Cylinder Position Sensor, IP67
SMCThe SMC D-M9P is a solid state auto switch (cylinder position sensor) with a 3-wire PNP output, red LED indicator, and 0.5 m grommet lead wire. It mounts directly to a compatible SMC actuator and detects piston position by sensing the magnet in the piston, with no moving parts to wear out.
Need a different lead length, NPN output, or a connector version? See the lead wire options and the D-M9 selection guide below.

Mounting note: On some cylinder series and bore sizes the auto switch is installed with a separate switch mounting bracket. Check the cylinder catalog for the bracket part number, or contact our technical team and we will confirm it for you.
Wiring
| Brown | +V (DC supply positive) |
| Blue | 0 V (DC supply negative) |
| Black | Output signal (PNP, sourcing) |
A PNP switch sources current to the load, so it pairs with a sinking (PNP-compatible) PLC input card. If your input card is sourcing, use the NPN SMC D-M9N instead.
D-M9P Lead Wire Options
The letter after "D-M9P" sets the lead wire length. Electrical specifications are the same across all lengths.
| Part number | Lead wire length |
| D-M9P (this product) | 0.5 m |
| D-M9PM | 1 m |
| D-M9PL | 3 m |
| D-M9PZ | 5 m |
Choosing the Right D-M9 Switch
| If you need | Choose |
| 3-wire PNP output, in-line entry | D-M9P (this product) |
| 3-wire NPN output | D-M9N |
| 2-wire output (replacing a 2-wire reed switch) | D-M9B |
| PNP with perpendicular (90°) lead exit for tight spaces | D-M9PV |
| PNP perpendicular with M8 3-pin connector | D-M9PVSAPC |
| PNP perpendicular with M12 4-pin connector | D-M9PVSDPC |
| 2-color indicator to help set the optimum switch position | D-M9PWV (PNP, perpendicular) |
| Shorter switch body with less protrusion past the actuator end | D-M9PL-5 (short type, 3 m lead) |
| ATEX Category 3 compliance | D-M9PZ-588 (5 m lead) |
| Low-cost reed switch, or a 100 VAC load | D-A93 (reed, 2-wire) |

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the SMC D-M9P PNP or NPN?
The D-M9P is PNP (sourcing) with a 3-wire output. The NPN version is the D-M9N, and the 2-wire version is the D-M9B.
What is the difference between the D-M9P and the D-M9PV?
They are electrically the same. The D-M9P has an in-line electrical entry, so the lead wire exits straight along the cylinder. The D-M9PV has a perpendicular entry, so the lead wire exits at 90°, which helps where there is little room past the end of the switch.
What do the letters after D-M9P mean?
They set the lead wire length: no letter is 0.5 m, M is 1 m, L is 3 m, and Z is 5 m. For example, the D-M9PL is the same switch with a 3 m lead.
What is the difference between the D-M9P and the D-A93?
The D-A93 is a 2-wire reed switch with mechanical contacts. The D-M9P is a 3-wire solid state switch with no contacts to wear, so it is the better choice for high-cycle applications and PLC inputs. The D-A93 costs less and can also switch 100 VAC loads. Both use the direct-mount style on many SMC cylinders; confirm the applicable switches in the cylinder catalog.
Do I need a mounting bracket?
It depends on the cylinder. Many SMC actuators accept the D-M9P directly, while some series and bore sizes need a separate switch mounting bracket. The cylinder catalog lists the bracket part number, or our technical team can confirm it.
Automation Distribution is an authorized SMC distributor. Order the SMC D-M9P online, or contact our technical team for help confirming cylinder compatibility, lead wire length, and mounting brackets.
