Why the EX600-DXPD

The EX600-DXPD adds 16 PNP digital input channels to any EX600 fieldbus manifold, bringing cylinder position feedback, proximity sensors, photoelectric switches, and limit switches onto the same network node as the solenoid valve outputs. Instead of running sensor wires back to PLC input cards in the control panel, the DXPD collects those signals at the manifold and passes them through the SI unit's fieldbus connection — eliminating the need for separate PLC I/O modules, terminal blocks, and the associated wiring.

Each of the 8 M12 5-pin connectors carries 2 inputs, 24V supply, and 0V — so a standard 3-wire PNP auto switch or proximity sensor connects directly with a single off-the-shelf M12 cordset. The unit supplies up to 0.5A per connector (2A total), which powers the connected sensors directly without a separate sensor power bus. Short-circuit protection per channel ensures a single sensor fault doesn't take down the entire input module.

The DXPD snaps onto the EX600 manifold alongside the SI unit, digital output modules, analog I/O modules, and IO-Link master modules in any order — up to 9 I/O units per manifold. At IP67, the entire assembly can mount on the machine frame without an enclosure, keeping the digital inputs physically close to the sensors they monitor.

M12 Connector Pin Assignment

Each M12 5-pin socket on the EX600-DXPD carries 2 input channels plus 24V sensor supply power:

PinSignal
1 +24V (control and input supply)
2 Input 1 (even-numbered input)
3 0V (control and input supply)
4 Input 2 (odd-numbered input)
5 Not connected (shield/reserved)

M12 4-pin connectors can also be connected (pin 5 unused). Standard 3-wire PNP sensors connect to pins 1 (+24V), 3 (0V), and 2 or 4 (signal).

Required Components

The EX600-DXPD is an I/O module — it requires an EX600 SI unit and endplate to function. A minimum working EX600 assembly with the DXPD consists of:

ComponentExampleNotes
SI Unit EX600-SEN7 (EtherNet/IP) One per manifold. The DXPD is compatible with all EX600 SI units (any protocol).
End Plate (D side) EX600-ED3 Power supply connection.
Digital Input Unit (this product) EX600-DXPD Snaps onto the manifold in any position. Up to 9 I/O units per SI unit.
Sensor Cables Standard M12 4- or 5-pin cordsets One per sensor. 2 sensors per connector if using both input channels.
Seal Caps EX9-AWTS (M12) Required on all unused connectors for IP67.
Valve Manifold (optional) SS5Y5-xxxx The DXPD can be used with or without a valve manifold — the EX600 can serve as a standalone distributed I/O node.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the EX600-DXPB and EX600-DXPD?

The EX600-DXPB has 8 inputs (4 × M12 connectors, 2 inputs each) and the EX600-DXPD has 16 inputs (8 × M12 connectors, 2 inputs each). Both are PNP, IP67, and use M12 5-pin sockets. Choose based on how many sensor inputs you need on that module.

Can I connect a 2-wire auto switch to the EX600-DXPD?

Yes. 2-wire and 3-wire PNP sensors are both compatible. For 2-wire sensors, connect to the +24V (pin 1) and input signal (pin 2 or 4) pins. The 9mA rated input current is compatible with standard SMC auto switches.

Can I use the EX600-DXPD without a valve manifold?

Yes. The EX600 platform can function as a standalone distributed I/O node without a valve manifold. You need the SI unit, end plate, and the DXPD module — the valve plate and valve manifold are optional. This is useful for applications that need distributed sensor inputs at the machine but don't have valves at that location.

How many digital input modules can I add to one EX600?

Up to 9 I/O units can be connected to one SI unit in any combination. You could have 9 DXPD modules for 144 total digital inputs, or mix digital input, output, analog, and IO-Link modules as needed.

Does the EX600-DXPD work with all EX600 SI units?

Yes. The DXPD is compatible with every EX600 SI unit regardless of protocol — EtherNet/IP (EX600-SEN7/8), PROFINET (EX600-SPN3/4/31), EtherCAT (EX600-SEC3/4), PROFIBUS-DP, CC-Link, DeviceNet, and POWERLINK. The I/O modules are protocol-independent.

What is the difference between the M12 connector (DXPD) and D-sub connector (DXPE) versions?

The EX600-DXPD uses 8 individual M12 5-pin sockets and is rated IP67 — designed for on-machine mounting. The EX600-DXPE uses a single D-sub 25-pin connector and is rated IP40 — designed for in-panel mounting where sensors are wired through a connector box or harness. Both provide 16 PNP inputs.
