What Is Yaskawa iCube Control?
iCube Control is Yaskawa’s open automation machine control platform. A single iC9200 controller replaces what used to require four separate systems: a motion controller, a programmable logic controller (PLC), a safety PLC, and a robot controller. It runs on a real-time Linux operating system, uses EtherCAT as the primary fieldbus, and is engineered, manufactured, and supported by Yaskawa America’s Drives & Motion Division.
The platform debuted in North America at Pack Expo 2022 after launching in Europe earlier that year. It succeeds the well-established MPiec Series (MP3200iec, MP3300iec, MP2300Siec) while preserving application compatibility for existing MP2000 and MP3000 users migrating forward.
At Automation Distribution, we stock and ship Yaskawa iCube controllers, Sigma-X servo systems, smartPanel HMIs, and the full complement of automation components required to build a complete control cabinet. Both flagship iC9226M variants are available for direct purchase below.

iCube Engineer — The Single Engineering Environment
iCube Engineer is the programming environment that makes the iC9200’s “one controller” promise real. Motion, logic, kinematics, safety, HMI, and VFD configuration all happen inside one software tool, with one project file, under one version-controlled workflow.
What you get in one environment
| Programming: IEC 61131-3 (graphical, structured text, SFC), PLCopen function blocks |
Custom libraries: C#, C++, Lua, Python, MATLAB Simulink |
Integrated safety: SIL 3 certified function blocks, NOLD Editor for safety CPU |
| HMI design: HMI Designer built in — OPC UA tags auto-sync to HMI project |
IDE integration: Visual Studio extension, Eclipse add-in |
Network config: EtherCAT topology, diagnostics, device certificates, multi-user auth |

Where the iC9200 Fits
The iC9200 is engineered for demanding multi-axis synchronized motion applications. Five verticals where machine builders and end users are deploying it today:
Packaging & Material HandlingCartoners, flow wrappers, case packers, palletizers. Pack Expo 2025 featured the iC9200 synchronizing linear, direct-drive, and rotary Sigma-X servo axes on Sigma Track 2 linear stages. |
Robotics & Automation CellsSingular Control architecture programs articulated robots, delta robots, SCARA, and auxiliary servo axes from one controller using the same PLCopen function blocks. No proprietary robot language required. |
Pharmaceutical & Process ControlFill/finish, tablet presses, lyophilizers, and clean-room conveyors. ISA/IEC 62443 security design and SIL 3 integrated safety support validated-environment requirements. |
CNC & MetalformingServo presses, winding machines, spring manufacturing, blanking/shearing. The broader MPiec family supports 5- and 6-axis G-code interpolation; the iC9200 covers high-axis-count synchronized press and forming applications. |
Converting, Printing & WindingWeb-handling, rotary knives, flying shears, slitters, separator and electrode manufacturing for secondary battery production. High-speed synchronized motion is the iC9200’s original design target. |
Building a Complete iCube-Controlled Cell
The iC9200 is the brain — but a production machine needs servos, HMIs, I/O, safety sensors, panel wiring, and climate control. Automation Distribution is authorized to supply every component of a complete iCube control cell from one source:
| Controllers Yaskawa iC9200 series |
Servo systems Yaskawa Sigma-X SERVOPACKs & motors with ASM-X safety module |
HMIs Yaskawa smartPanel and Panel PC |
Remote I/O Yaskawa SLIO modules |
| Safety sensors Leuze MLC 530 light curtains with FSoE integration |
Terminal blocks WAGO TOPJOB S distribution blocks |
Panel climate Pfannenberg cooling units and fans |
Pneumatics SMC cylinders, valves, and manifolds |
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Yaskawa iCube Control and the MPiec Series?
iCube Control is Yaskawa’s next-generation machine control platform, built on a real-time Linux operating system with the Triton 3-core ASIC processor. It succeeds the MPiec Series (MP3200iec, MP3300iec, MP2300Siec) while preserving compatibility for application migration. MPiec remains available and supported for existing users; iCube is the forward path for new machine designs. For existing MP2000/MP3000 users, Yaskawa supports migration to the successor platform. Contact Automation Distribution for a migration plan.
Do I need the FSoE variant for machine safety?
Only if you want integrated safety on the controller itself. The iC9226M-FSoE includes a certified EtherCAT FailSafe over EtherCAT (FSoE) master, which means you can program SIL 3 safety applications inside iCube Engineer using Yaskawa’s certified safety function blocks — no external safety PLC required. The standard iC9226M-EC still supports safety-rated I/O and Sigma-X servos with the ASM-X Advanced Safety Module, but safety logic lives on a separate safety device. For most new designs requiring SIL 3, the FSoE variant lowers total installed cost.
What programming languages does iCube Engineer support?
iCube Engineer natively supports all IEC 61131-3 languages: ladder diagram, structured text, function block diagram, and sequential function chart (SFC), with PLCopen-compliant motion function blocks. For custom libraries and advanced algorithms, you can write in C++, C#, Lua, Python, or MATLAB Simulink. An SDK plus Visual Studio extension and Eclipse add-in are provided for higher-language development.
How many axes can one iC9200 controller handle?
The iC9226M hardware ships with a baseline license of 4 FMK servo axes plus 4 virtual axes and scales up to 64 real plus 64 virtual synchronized axes via electronic feature licenses (8-, 12-, 16-, 24-, 32-, and 64-axis license tiers). This means you pay only for the axis count each machine needs and upgrade in-field without replacing hardware. Contact Automation Distribution for license pricing.
What network protocols does the iC9200 support?
EtherCAT master with CoE/FoE/EoE (X5 port), plus OPC UA Server/Client/Pub-Sub, EtherNet/IP Scanner and Adapter, PROFINET IO RT Controller and I-Device, and Modbus TCP Client/Server. The controller includes 2 × Gigabit Ethernet ports (X3 LAN1, X4 LAN2), 2 × 100 Megabit network ports (X5 EC, X6 OPT), a relay output (X1), and 24 VDC power input (X2). The FSoE variant adds the FailSafe over EtherCAT safety master layer for SIL 3 applications.
Does Yaskawa offer training on iCube Control?
Yes. Yaskawa’s Technical Training Services (TTS) runs classroom training at their Waukegan, IL and Columbus, OH facilities, onsite customer training through the Drives Road Show, and self-guided video training via the “Learn with Yaskawa” platform. Contact Automation Distribution about local training and engineering support for Mid-Atlantic and Northeast customers.
