Baumer OX Series Smart 2D Profile Sensors
Laser triangulation for inline measurement, inspection, and positioning. Three sensor variants — OXM, OXP, and OXS — covering everything from onboard multitools to raw profile output to edge switching.
What Is the Baumer OX Series?
The Baumer OX Series is a family of compact, all-in-one 2D laser triangulation profile sensors. Each sensor projects a laser line onto a target surface, captures the reflected light on an internal camera, and computes the 2D cross-sectional profile of the object — all inside the housing, with no external controller required.
The series is organized into three functional variants — OXM, OXP, and OXS — that share the same housing form factor, Power-over-Ethernet connectivity, and integrated web interface, but differ in how they process and output measurement data. Within each variant, sensors are available in red laser (660 nm, Class 1 or Class 2) and blue laser (405 nm, Class 2) configurations, with measurement ranges from 25 mm to 200 mm.
The OX series is suited wherever OK/NOK inspection or positioning tasks are based on height profile evaluation — especially where camera systems face challenges with contrast, lighting, or speed requirements.
Three Variants for Different Use Cases
Onboard measurement tools process the profile and deliver results in physical units (mm, degrees) directly to your PLC or control system. No external software, no vision controller needed at the machine.
- Up to 12 measurement tools onboard
- Up to 7 tools active simultaneously
- Profile Matcher for teach-in OK/NOK
- ROI tracking for moving parts
- Results output via Profinet, EtherNet/IP, Modbus, IO-Link, analog, switching
Outputs raw 2D point cloud profile data via UDP or SDK to an external PC or vision system. Best when custom algorithms or higher-level vision software will handle the analysis.
- Full raw profile via UDP or OX-Line SDK
- Same housing and PoE connectivity as OXM
- Integrated web server for alignment and config
- Lower list price than OXM equivalents
A streamlined variant focused on edge detection with direct switching output. Suited for presence/absence detection, position control, and basic height tasks where the full OXM toolset is not required.
- Direct switching output — simple PLC integration

Typical Applications
Height Checks on Assembly Parts
Verify component presence and correct seating height relative to a datum in electronics, automotive, and mechanical assembly lines.
Gap & Flush Measurement
Measure panel-to-panel gaps and flush in automotive body construction — a primary use case for OXM200-R10 and B20 with wide fields of view.
Robot Positioning & Pick-and-Place
Control and position feed parts on conveyors with varying orientation. ROI tracking handles positional variation without precise fixturing.
Weld Seam Inspection
Measure weld bead width, height, and cross-sectional area. Blue laser variants (B02, B20) are preferred on metallic surfaces where red laser speckle degrades accuracy.
Inline OK/NOK Inspection
Use OXM Profile Matcher to teach-in good part profiles and set tolerance windows for high-speed go/no-go decisions — up to 800 Hz profile acquisition rate.
Tongue-and-Groove & Joint Inspection
Inspect dimensional accuracy of interlocking joints on flooring planks, connectors, and mechanical assemblies based on height profile evaluation.
Shared Platform: Connectivity & Hardware
All OX series sensors share the same housing, Power-over-Ethernet architecture, and Ethernet connector. One cable handles both power and data.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the Baumer OXM, OXP, and OXS profile sensors?
OXM (Multitools & Profile): Onboard measurement tools deliver processed results in physical units directly to your PLC — height, width, gap, angle, circle, and more. No external vision controller needed. OXP (Profile Output): Outputs raw 2D point cloud data via SDK or UDP to an external PC or system. Best when custom algorithms are required. OXS (Edge/Switching): Simplified edge detection with switching output for presence detection and basic positioning at lower cost.
What is the difference between OX100 and OX200 series sensors?
OX200 sensors are Laser Class 2 with higher Z-resolution (down to 5 µm) and include the full measurement tool set including Profile Matcher. OX100 sensors are Laser Class 1 — eye-safe without administrative laser safety controls — at somewhat lower resolution and lower list price. Both share the same compact housing and connectivity options.
When should I choose a blue laser OX sensor over a red laser?
Blue laser variants (405 nm — B02, B20) reduce speckle noise on shiny, metallic, polished, or chrome-plated surfaces. They perform better on weld seams, machined aluminum, and electroplated parts where red laser speckle would degrade accuracy. Red laser variants (660 nm — R05, R10) are general-purpose and suited to matte, painted, or non-reflective surfaces.
What communication protocols do Baumer OX series sensors support?
OXM and OXS variants include Profinet, EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP, OPC UA, IO-Link, UDP, analog output, and digital switching outputs — all built in. OXP variants provide raw profile data via UDP and the OX-Line SDK. All sensors use Power-over-Ethernet: one cable for power and data.
How are Baumer OX sensors set up and configured?
All OX series sensors include an integrated web server. Connect a laptop to the Ethernet port and open the browser-based interface for live profile visualization, measurement tool configuration, and parameterization — no software installation required. The Baumer Sensor Suite software is available for advanced setup and multi-sensor management.
What is the Profile Matcher tool on OXM sensors?
Profile Matcher allows you to teach-in a known good part profile and define tolerance windows directly via the web interface. The sensor then compares each scanned profile to the reference and outputs a direct switching signal for inline OK/NOK inspection — no external software or vision controller required.
