The Wago 221-485 is a 5-conductor compact splicing connector with lever actuation, designed for Ex e increased-safety applications and based on Wago’s 221 Series CAGE CLAMP technology. It connects copper solid, stranded, and fine-stranded conductors from 0.14–4 mm² (24–12 AWG) via side-entry wiring and provides clear visual inspection through its transparent housing with light gray levers. Rated up to 440 V and 32 A in Ex e II applications (20 A / 440 V in UL Use Group C), it supports continuous operating temperatures from -55 to +105 °C and meets UL 60079, IEC/EN 60079-7, and UL94 V2 flammability requirements. The connector is approved only in conjunction with a suitable mounting carrier (e.g., 221-501) and must be installed in an enclosure complying with EN 60079-0/31 for use in hazardous areas. Typical uses include terminal and device wiring in industrial control panels, machinery, and process equipment where quick, tool-free terminations and Ex e conformity are required. The 11 mm strip length, side-entry geometry, and 5-way commoning support compact multi-point distribution and tap connections. Accessories such as the 221-501 Ex mounting carrier enable DIN-rail or screw mounting while maintaining required clearances and creepage distances for hazardous-location operation.
