Reading the Spec: What Matters in a Washdown Motor

Enclosure (TEFC vs TENV) TEFC (Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled) uses an external fan and shroud for cooling. TENV (Totally Enclosed Non-Ventilated) removes the fan and cover entirely, giving a smoother exterior with fewer places for debris to collect, which suits direct sanitary zones at lower horsepower.
Ingress Protection (IP) IP55 and IP56 cover standard washdown. IP66 handles powerful water jets and heavier duty. IP69K is the benchmark for close-range, high-pressure, high-temperature steam cleaning. Confirm the rating on each model datasheet, as it varies by series.
Housing & Finish Painted severe-duty motors use epoxy systems over cast iron with stainless hardware. Food-safe motors use 300-series stainless steel throughout with sloped, smooth surfaces designed to shed water and resist caustic and chlorinated wash chemistry.

A washdown motor is sealed and finished to withstand regular high-pressure cleaning. A food-safe motor goes further with 300-series stainless steel construction, smooth crevice-minimized surfaces, and often USDA, 3-A, or BISSC compliance for use in or near direct food-contact zones. All food-safe motors are washdown capable, but not every washdown motor meets food-safe sanitary standards.

What IP rating do I need for washdown?
