Why the EX600-SEN7
The EX600-SEN7 is SMC's current-generation EtherNet/IP SI unit for the EX600 modular fieldbus platform, replacing the prior-generation EX600-SEN1 (single port) and EX600-SEN3 (dual port). It is the communication head unit for the entire EX600 manifold assembly — one per manifold, determining the network protocol while the rest of the system remains modular and interchangeable.
Where the SEN1 provided basic EtherNet/IP connectivity through a single port, the SEN7 adds the capabilities that modern EtherNet/IP architectures require. Dual Ethernet ports support star, linear, and DLR (Device Level Ring) topologies — enabling ring-based network redundancy without external switches. QuickConnect reduces communication startup time from approximately 10 seconds to 0.5 seconds, which is critical for robotic tool changer applications where the EX600 manifold powers up each time a tool engages. The built-in web server provides browser-based access to system status, parameter settings, and forced output for commissioning and troubleshooting — no PLC-specific software or laptop required at the machine.
The SEN7 also unlocks IO-Link master module support. With the prior-generation SEN1, IO-Link modules could not be used. With the SEN7, you can snap IO-Link master modules (EX600-LAB1 for Port Class A sensors, EX600-LBB1 for Port Class B actuators) directly onto the manifold — up to 9 IO-Link units supporting 36 IO-Link devices total. This means pressure sensors, flow sensors, position sensors, electro-pneumatic regulators, and IO-Link terminal units for remote auto switch inputs all communicate through the same EX600 node, sharing one IP address on the EtherNet/IP network.
DLR Ring Topology
Dual Ethernet ports support Device Level Ring for network redundancy without external managed switches. If a cable is disconnected or damaged anywhere in the ring, communication continues through the alternate path and the PLC identifies the disconnected location. The PLC must support DLR to use this feature.
QuickConnect (~0.5s Startup)
Standard fieldbus devices take approximately 10 seconds from power-on to communication connection. The EX600-SEN7's QuickConnect support reduces this to approximately 0.5 seconds — essential for robotic tool changer applications where the manifold cycles power each time a new tool engages. The PLC must support QuickConnect to use this feature.
Built-In Web Server
Access EX600 system status, parameter settings, and forced output through any standard web browser (Chrome, etc.) by navigating to the SI unit's IP address. No PLC-specific software required. Enables remote diagnostics and commissioning verification without a laptop connected to the PLC.
IO-Link Master Module Support
Connects IO-Link master modules (EX600-LAB1 Port Class A, EX600-LBB1 Port Class B) directly on the manifold. Bridge IO-Link pressure sensors, flow sensors, electro-pneumatic regulators, position sensors, and IO-Link terminal units into the EtherNet/IP network. Automatic parameter download enables plug-and-play device replacement.
Self-Diagnostic Functions
Built-in input/output open-circuit and short-circuit detection, plus signal ON/OFF counter per channel. IO-Link diagnostics add port short-circuit detection, non-connected device detection, misconnected device alerts, and port misconfiguration notification. Diagnostic data is accessible via PLC, web server, or IO-Link setting tool (TMG IO-Link Device Tool).
Modular I/O Expansion
Snap on up to 9 I/O units in any combination: digital input modules (8/16 channel, M12/M8/D-sub), digital output modules, digital I/O combo modules, analog input/output modules, and IO-Link master modules. All communicate through the SEN7's single EtherNet/IP connection.

All three generations use identical manifold hardware, I/O modules, valve plates, and endplates. Upgrading from SEN1 or SEN3 to SEN7 requires only swapping the SI unit and updating the PLC EDS file. Note: the SEN7 has a lower per-solenoid load rating (1.0W vs 1.5W) — verify valve wattage before upgrading.
Applications
Packaging & Assembly Lines
Replace discrete solenoid wiring on multi-station SY5000 and SY7000 manifolds. Add digital input modules for cylinder position feedback. Built-in diagnostics identify faulted solenoids before unplanned downtime occurs.
Robotic End-of-Arm Tooling
QuickConnect enables sub-second communication startup on tool changers. JSY1000/3000/5000 compact valves with EX600 fieldbus minimize weight and footprint on the robot arm. DLR ring topology provides network redundancy on critical robotic cells.
On-Machine / IP67 Installations
Mount the EX600 directly on the machine frame with M12 or M8 connector I/O modules — no enclosure needed. Reduces pneumatic tubing runs, eliminates panel space, and puts the manifold closer to the actuators for faster response.
IO-Link Sensor Integration
Combine valve control with IO-Link pressure sensors, flow sensors, and electro-pneumatic regulators on a single EX600 node. Enable closed-loop pressure control (PSE sensor → ITV regulator) directly from the manifold using the analog I/O module, with IO-Link providing device-level diagnostics and automatic parameter backup.

Contact Application EngineeringFrequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the EX600-SEN7 and EX600-SEN1?
The EX600-SEN7 is the current-generation replacement for the EX600-SEN1. The SEN7 adds dual Ethernet ports (vs. single on SEN1), DLR ring topology support, QuickConnect for ~0.5-second startup, a built-in web server for browser-based diagnostics, IO-Link master module compatibility, and EtherNet/IP Conformance version Composite 18 (vs. Composite 11 on SEN1). Both use the same manifold hardware, I/O modules, endplates, and valve plates.
What is the difference between the EX600-SEN7 and EX600-SEN8?
The EX600-SEN7 is PNP (Source / Negative Common) and the EX600-SEN8 is NPN (Sink / Positive Common). All other specifications are identical. PNP is the most common configuration in North American and European installations. The output type must match the solenoid valve wiring configuration.
Can I upgrade from an EX600-SEN1 to an EX600-SEN7 on an existing manifold?
Yes. The SEN7 uses the same physical mounting, unit connector, valve plate brackets, endplates, and I/O modules as the SEN1. Remove the SEN1, snap the SEN7 into the same position, update the PLC configuration with the new EDS file, and the manifold is upgraded. No rewiring, no mechanical changes. Verify that all solenoid valves are rated at 1.0W or less, as the SEN7 has a lower per-solenoid load rating than the SEN1 (1.0W vs. 1.5W).
What is QuickConnect and when do I need it?
QuickConnect is an EtherNet/IP feature that reduces the time from power-on to active communication from approximately 10 seconds to approximately 0.5 seconds. It is critical for robotic tool changer applications where the EX600 manifold on the tool side powers down when the tool is parked and powers back up when the robot engages a new tool. Without QuickConnect, the robot would need to wait 10 seconds after each tool change before valves respond. The PLC must also support QuickConnect for this feature to function.
How do I configure the EX600-SEN7 in a Rockwell PLC?
Download the EDS file from SMC's website (smcworld.com) and install it in Studio 5000 or RSLogix 5000 using the EDS Hardware Installation Tool. The EX600-SEN7 will appear as a cataloged EtherNet/IP device with auto-mapped I/O structure. Set the IP address via the DIP switches on the SI unit or assign it through a DHCP server. For DLR ring topology, ensure the PLC's EtherNet/IP module supports DLR supervisor functionality.
What if I don't use Rockwell PLCs?
The EX600-SEN7 is EtherNet/IP-specific. For Siemens PROFINET systems, use the EX600-SPN3 (PNP) or EX600-SPN4 (NPN). For Beckhoff EtherCAT systems, use the EX600-SEC3 (PNP) or EX600-SEC4 (NPN). All use the same manifold, I/O modules, and endplates — only the SI unit changes.
